Let’s try something new–I’m going to replicate my social media posts here on my website.
I guess I should probably give some context for my last post about looking into establishing a presence on BlueSky’s social media platform. I’m not leaving Facebook or Instagram, but I am really concerned about the rise of AI-generated images on both platforms. My feed is filled with images that are pretty clearly AI, with captions like, “Why don’t photos like this ever trend?”
It’s a blatant attempt by Meta to engage its users on the platform by offering an algorhythmically-calculated stream of content that a computer has generated, not a photographer. And perhaps worse, Meta’s AI is getting better because it uses images like mine to train itself.
For example, of the two images on this post, which one is mine, and which one is AI?
I work hard to bring my images to the world, and it’s more than a little disheartening that Meta is using AI to train its algorithm and boost engagement. I’m going to continue to post here and IG, but perhaps when you see an image that you’re not sure is real, and it’s posted by an account that is not a real person or real photographer, you might just scroll by without hitting “like”.
I’ve personally started blocking those accounts that post stuff like that, and my feed has become much more pleasant as a result. Real images from real photographers.
Keep it real! Thanks for listening.
And if you’ve read this far, I’m at https://bsky.app/profile/justalittlelight.com over on BlueSky.
